Hello everyone, my name is Rishabh Sinha and I am a Trainee Navigating Officer Cadet and preparing for 2nd Mates in Merchant navy in the SHIPPING CORPORATION OF INDIA(SCI).

DNS Leading To Bsc In Nautical Sciences-course Structure
As we all know in DNS LEADING TO BSC NAUTICAL SCIENCE program in 1st year you need to appear for IMU 1 and 2 semester exams. After 18 months of training on board. We have to submit all the tasks, activity work, project work and give tests for further process of getting SSTP certificate and then endorsement by IMU. Then you may appear for 3,4 and 5 semesters and then you have to give the 2 Mates examination or if you don’t want BSC Degree you may directly give 2 Mates examination (AS PER IMU CIRCULAR 1922) .(2MATES 4 MONTHS FOUNDATION COURSE CAN BE DONE DURING THE EXAMINATION OF 3,4 AND 5 SEMESTERS). AFTER EXAMINATION SIGNALS AND ORALS HAS TO BE GIVEN AND ONCE YOU CLEAR EVERYTHING YOU BECOME 3 OFFICER .(*ADVANCED STCW AND MODULAR COURSES SHOULD BE COMPLETED). In the maritime industry, achieving the rank of Second Mate is a significant milestone. For those holding a Second Mate Certificate of Competency (COC) or above, there is an exciting opportunity to further enhance their qualifications. The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) recognizes the Second Mate CoC or above as equivalent to a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Nautical Science. This equivalence opens up a sea of possibilities for professional growth and academic advancement.
SSTP CERTIFICATE PROVIDED BY SCI
Option 1: Get Bsc Nautical Science Degree From Imu
The Indian Maritime University, abbreviated as IMU, is a public central university directly under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, in India. It is established by an Act of Parliament in 2008 and it is one of the 56 central university in India as per the latest UGC list.
Procedure for Obtaining B.Sc. (Applied Nautical Science) Degree
A. Eligibility Criteria for Obtaining B.Sc. (Applied Nautical Science) Degree
A candidate who wants B.Sc. (Applied Nautical Science) Degree must make at least one attempt in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th-semester examination conducted by IMU before appearing in 2nd mates examinations (6th semester) otherwise they will be not considered for award of degree.
Thereafter, the student may complete the 2nd Mate examination. 6th-semester marks will be uploaded after the student intimates to IMU that he/she has completed the 2nd Mate examination.
After successful completion of all the above steps the student will be allowed to register for convocation

IMU Fees For Bsc Degree
BSC Fees for degree consists of RE-REGESTRATION fees of 30k,4k fees for per paper etc. mentioned below.A sum of RS 43900 has to be paid for the degree.

B. Process for obtaining Provisional certificate, Consolidated Marksheet and Degree Certificate
Students of Diploma in Nautical Science leading to B.Sc. (Applied Nautical Science) who have completed the programme in all respect i.e. updation of Second Mate marks issued by DG, Shipping (student has to provide the same), updation of practical and internal marks from the respective Institutes/Campuses will be eligible for issue of Provisional Degree Certificate and the Consolidated Mark Sheets.
For students of IMU Campuses, the Provisional Degree Certificate and the Consolidated Mark Sheets will be sent to the concerned IMU Campuses within one month from the date of publication of revaluation results.
For students of Affiliated Institutes, the Provisional Degree Certificate and the Consolidated Mark Sheet will be sent to the concerned student’s home address through “Speed Post” within one month from the date of publication of revaluation results.
The provisional certificate issued is valid till the issue of the Degree Certificate after convocation.

How do I get my Degree Certificate?
The Degree Certificate is awarded either in-person to the respective Student on the day of the Convocation or if the Student has registered for in-Absentia the Degree Certificate is sent by Speed Post to the registered postal address of the Student. IMU will not send the certificate, if a Student gives Foreign country address.
If the student is eligible for getting Degree and has made the payment of Rs. 500/- for Degree Certificate and wishes to receive the Degree Certificate in-Person on the Convocation day, then the student has to register online through their Student login within the stipulated time frame. The Online Registration link will be made available on IMU’s website: www.imu.ac.in after the Convocation is announced. However, the link will be available through the year for Online registration for students who have become eligible for the Convocation no as well as previously.

For each Convocation a period is taken (usually one complete year or more) within which all students who have cleared all their Semesters successfully will automatically become eligible for the Degree Certificate. AIU has been mandated by the Department of School Education, Ministry of Education, GoI to accord equivalence to the Indian Boards for the Secondary/Senior Secondary Examination. The Gazette Notification No. CG-DL-W-20112021-231254 dated 15th November. 2021 and Letter No. F.11-3/2016-Sch.3 dated 15th November, 2021 from Ministry of Education, GoI. This will help in addressing the difficulties being faced by the students in respect of equivalence of certificates issued by the School Education Boards in India for the purposes of admissions in higher education institutions and employment in Central/State Government. The equivalence granted by AIU will be automatically considered as inter-se parity between the Boards in India, permitting smooth Inter-School Education Board migrations, and shall be valid at all India level for the purpose of higher education and employment.
In accordance with the gazette notification, a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) was prepared by AIU. The SOP has been approved by Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India vide letter No.F.11-3/2016-Sch.3 dated 15th July, 2022. The equivalence to the Certification of Indian School Boards shall be given as per the approved Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).

Will AIU Make The Equivalant Certificate?
- Indian seafarers of the nautical discipline have been facing difficulty in pursuing higher academic qualifications as the Certificate of Competency [CoC] issued by the Indian Maritime Administration was not accepted by all Universities

The matter was therefore taken up with the Association of Indian Universities [AIU] as navigating officers undergo rigorous training and certification programme which includes unique blend of book learning and on the job practical learning on board merchant ships. Further, the competence of seafarers is assessed to intemational standards specified in the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping Convention, 1978, as amended ISTCW Convention] and only those who demonstrate the required competence are issued with Certificate of Competency.’
3. The syllabus of 2nd Mate (FG) certificate competency was compared with the BSc Nautical science degree by the expert committee. The recommendation of the expert committee were approved by the equivalence committee of the Association of Indian Universities [AIU]. Subsequent to the approval of the equivalence committee, the Governing council of AIU in its 369th Meeting held on June 29, 2022 has accorded equivalence of 2nd Mate CoC issued by Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways as equivalence to B.Sc. (Nautical Science). The copy of the letter No. EV/V[ (5) 12022 dated July 18, 2022 from Secretary General of Association of Indian Universities in this regard is enclosed.
4. 2″nd Mate COC [FG] holders desiring to obtain equivalence certificate may therefore approach to Association of Indian Universities.

Approval Of AIU In 369th Meeting
. The Governing Council of AIU in its 369th meeting held on 29th June, 2022 has approved the recommendation of equivalence committee and accorded equivalence to 2nd Mate CoC issued by the Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways as equivalent to B.Sc. (Nautical Science).

What To Choose?
1. If You Have Enough Money I Will Recommend You Taking Degree From Imu.your Parents Can Join The Convocation Ceremony And Can See You Recieving The Degree.you Will Get Opportunity To Meet Highly Profession People Of Society. In Eighth Convocation Hon’ble President Of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu Was Invited.
2. If You Have Given Your 2nd Mates Examination There Is No Choice Go Ahead With The AIU Equivalent Certificate, you Are Eligible To Appear For Higher Studies.
Conclusion:-
I Will Recommend Everyone To Appear For The Bsc Degree From IMU As 14160 Has To Be Paid Even If You Apply From AIU, But It Totally Depends On The Situation Of A Student. AIU Equivalent Certificate is = Bsc Degree From IMU. So You Can Use It For Further Higher Studies.
